The fastest way to reach the city outskirts from Pudong Airport, connecting to Metro Line 2, 7, and 16.
Shanghai Metro (Subway)
Extensive network, including Line 2 which connects both Pudong (PVG) and Hongqiao (SHA) airports to the city center.

What to Do & Eat: Shanghai Layover Plans
If you have 3–5 Hours:
Best to stay within Pudong Airport (PVG) Terminal 2 to avoid missing your connection.
- Grab delicious soup dumplings at Yang’s Dumplings Express (check for airport branch).
- Explore shops and dining options within the terminal.
- Relax in one of the airport lounges (access may depend on your ticket or lounge membership).
If you have 6–8 Hours:
You can venture out for a quick taste of the city center.
- Take the Maglev train + Metro Line 2 to East Nanjing Road Station.
- Walk to The Bund: Stroll along the Huangpu River, enjoy the iconic skyline views of Pudong.
- Grab a quick bite at a local eatery on Nanjing Road pedestrian street (many options available).
- Allow ample time to return to the airport (at least 2-3 hours before flight).
If you have 8–12+ Hours:
More time allows for deeper exploration.
- Visit Yu Garden (Yuyuan Garden): A beautiful classical Chinese garden with traditional pavilions and ponds. Explore the nearby Yuyuan Bazaar.
- Explore Xintiandi: A stylish area with restored Shikumen (stone gate) houses, now home to trendy cafés, restaurants, and boutiques.
